With the potential for severe weather over the next several days, Columbia Gas has some gas service safety tips to keep you and your family safe.
Your natural gas meter and equipment are designed to withstand winter weather conditions, but it’s important to make sure we have access to your meter and that your vents are clear of snow to operate properly.
Why is it so important to keep your meter and vents clear?
Hard-packed snow, icicles falling from your eaves, or water freezing on your meter can create safety hazards.
In case of emergency, our emergency response crews need a clear path to access your meter.
Use a broom instead of a shovel to clear snow away from the meter and never kick or hit the meter or piping.
Snow and ice build-up around the fresh-air and exhaust vents for your natural gas appliances can cause them to malfunction and create a carbon monoxide hazard.
Throughout the storm, Columbia Gas representatives are available to answer your emergency calls at 1-800-432-9515.
If you suspect a gas leak or think you smell gas, get out of the house, apartment or mobile home and then call 9-1-1.
