LEXINGTON, KY. (March 4, 2026) – As part of Kentucky’s Severe Weather Awareness Week, the annual Statewide Tornado Drill will be conducted at 10:07 a.m. EST today, Wednesday, March 4. Lexington Emergency Management will participate in this drill.
During the drill, the National Weather Service (NWS), in partnership with Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM), will issue a test tornado warning message that will activate weather alert radios. All Kentuckians are encouraged to practice tornado safety actions at home, school, or work. Lexington Emergency Management will activate its network of outdoor warning sirens with a siren wail. Many television and radio stations may interrupt programming to cover the tornado drill.
In Fayette County, Lexington Emergency Management will test the actual tornado warning sirens at 10:07 a.m. The sirens will sound for approximately two minutes as part of the test. Please do not call 9-1-1 during the test.
The LexAlerts notification system will also send a test message to those registered for weather alerts. This message will be clearly identified and begin with “this is a test.”
This year, alerts will activate the Emergency Alert System (EAS). This includes NOAA Weather Radio, local television and radio stations, and cable override. The tornado drill will not set off a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) on your mobile phone. Additionally, if inclement weather is forecasted for March 4, the Statewide Tornado Drill will be postponed or canceled.
