With more heavy rain in the Bluegrass this week, many low-lying roads in the area are flooding. Already we’ve seen at least one water rescue in an adjacent county after motorists tried to drive through a flooded underpass.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a motorist drives a vehicle into flood waters. The next largest segment of flood-related deaths involves people walking near or through flood waters.
6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock an adult off his or her feet.
12 inches of water can carry away a small car.
24 inches of water can carry away most passenger vehicles.
When in doubt – turn around, don’t drown.
