Happy Valentine’s Day, Lexington! Here we go again!

Here’s the latest radar at 9am showing the “wintry mix” headed our way.

Here's National Weather Service Louisville's timeline for snow's arrival across the region today.

Here’s NWS Louisville’s timeline for snow’s arrival across the region today (click image to enlarge).

The National Weather Service in Louisville estimates that rain/sleet/snow will start in Lexington around mid to late afternoon. The drive home today could be a challenge. Snow will continue through evening until tomorrow morning. Total accumulation could be as much as 4″ (more in Northern Kentucky).

Update: Fayette County Schools will be dismissing one hour early today due to the anticipated weather conditions this afternoon.

The weather will turn around give us a taste of spring, with a warming trend next week. Daytime highs in the 50s and maybe 60s. Until we thaw out, though, be careful out there!

…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING…

.A STRONG CLIPPER WILL QUICKLY MOVE THROUGH THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON…BRINGING A SWATH OF ACCUMULATING SNOWS ACROSS SOUTHERN INDIANA AND MUCH OF CENTRAL KENTUCKY. LIGHT SNOW LOOKS TO BEGIN AROUND NOON ACROSS SOUTHERN INDIANA…AND BY MID AFTERNOON ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY. RAIN WILL CHANGE TO SNOW ACROSS EAST CENTRAL KENTUCKY THIS EVENING. SNOW MAY BECOME OCCASIONALLY HEAVY ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY LATE THIS AFTERNOON…ADVERSELY AFFECTING THE AFTERNOON COMMUTE.

THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NOW IN EFFECT FROM NOON EST /11 AM CST/ TODAY TO 4 AM EST /3 AM CST/ SATURDAY.

* TIMING: LIGHT SNOW WILL BEGIN BY NOON ACROSS SOUTHERN INDIANA. AN INITIAL RAIN SNOW MIX WILL CHANGE OVER TO SNOW BY MID AFTERNOON ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY. SNOW MAY BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES LATE THIS AFTERNOON…SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING VISIBILITIES. SNOW WILL DIMINISH FROM WEST TO EAST AROUND MIDNIGHT.

* MAIN IMPACT: 2 TO 4 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS. AREAS SOUTH OF I-64 COULD BRIEFLY SEE RAIN MIX IN WITH SNOW THIS AFTERNOON…WHICH MAY REDUCE SNOW ACCUMULATIONS SLIGHTLY.

* OTHER IMPACTS: SNOWFALL RATES MAY BE HEAVY AT TIMES RIGHT AROUND RUSH HOUR. VISIBILITIES MAY LOWER SIGNIFICANTLY…WHILE ROADS BECOME SLICK AND HAZARDOUS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES…AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
